THE KINETICS OF SULFATHIAZOL BIODEGRADATION AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRODUCTS
Most of sulfanilamide derivatives belong to the group of bacteriostatic agents and they are often used in animal breeding. Therefore, their residues enter the environment in very high level. This may result in a local occurrence of serious disturbances in bacterial biocenosis.
The aim of the study was to assess a biodegradation of sulfathiazole, one of the sulfanilamide derivatives, occurring in the environment in high concentration. Biodegradation process was conducted under laboratory conditions in a leachate from a cultivated field using natural fertilizers (fresh manure) and in activated sludge from a mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plant. After ending the experiment the biodegradation kinetics was assessed. The resulting products were identified using UPLC-QTOF method and their total chronic toxicity was determined using MARA® bioassay.
Sulfathiazole underwent the complete degradation in both environmental matrices. The half-life was from 12 to 20 days. Additionally, the decrease in chronic toxicity of the studied samples occurred during sulfonamide biodegradation.
