DETERMINING THE TOTAL PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS (TPH) CONTENT IN WATER USING FTIR SPECTROSCOPY
This paper discusses the possibility of using FTIR spectroscopy for determining the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in water. The study helped evaluate the influence of the reference substance and the type of extractant on the quality of results. In order to estimate the relative error of the spectroscopic method, the results were compared with those obtained using gas chromatography. The comparison was made using reference samples and water samples collected from ten different water reservoirs located in or around Łódź. The preliminary results indicate that the spectroscopic method is a good alternative to normative chromatographic methods of determining the TPH content.
