Industrial waste deposited in landfills is a potential environmental hazard and can cause deterioration of the environment. The deposited waste is the site of biological, physical and chemical processes that produce a number of harmful substances, such as landfill gas, leachate and odors. These substances, when entering the environment, can pose a threat to all its elements, especially groundwater. Monitoring of the environmental impact of the landfill plays an important role in assessing the condition of particular elements of nature. These studies make it possible to capture changes occurring in the waste bed itself, as well as in particular elements of the environment in the preparatory, operation and aftercare periods. On the basis of long-term monitoring studies (conducted between 1995 and 2016), the quality of groundwater around the industrial waste landfill in Zgierz was determined and its impact on the environment was assessed. The quality of the monitoring was also assessed in relation to the applicable law. The analysis of the data confirms that in the operation period the industrial landfill has not contributed to deterioration of groundwater quality due to a number of safety measures applied. In the aftercare period groundwater contamination is observed which may result from damage of the landfill lining. Landfill monitoring plays a key role in the assessment of causal relationships between the state of the landfill and elements of the environment.
